Earth Charter

We stand at a critical moment in Earth's history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise.
Earth Charter/Preamble

The InstitutoHarmonia da Terra is affiliated with International Earth Charter, and since its foundation, develops educative actions inspired and aligned with Earth Charter. In 2010, it has participated in international conferences celebrating the 10th anniversary of Earth Charter. This year supports Earth Charter advertising about Green Economy and Sustainability and the insertion of the charter in the agenda of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development RIO+20 in 2012.

The Earth Charter is a planetary document that provides ethic principles and values for a construction of a more sustainable, responsible and peaceful society.

In 1992, at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, has come the first version of the charter. After eight years in a participative process involving all continents and thousands of people of all races, religions, ages and professions, was launched, in late 2000, the final version in Peace Palace at The Hague, Netherlands.

In 2003 UNESCO recognized the Earth Charter as an essential tool for education and sustainable development.

Among the worldwide committees members of the movement are Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, Leonardo Boff, Brazilian writer, Brendam MacKey, Australian scientist, Steven Rockefeller, American chair, Ruud Lubbers, former Prime minister of the Netherlands and Basma Bint Talal, princess of Jordan.

At a time there is an urgent need to change the way we think and live, the Earth Charter defy us to examine our values and to choose a better path. International alliances are increasingly necessary, the Earth Charter encourage us to seek common features in the middle of our diversity and to adopt a new global ethic, shared by a growing number of people all around the world. In a moment where education for sustainability has become essential, the Earth Charter offers a very valuable educational tool.
